Ideas! Coffee House was born with a vision.

Even before birth, we knew what we wanted to be when we grew up: a warm friendly place where people could come together to discus ideas, network, read, or just hang out and have a good time with friends over a great cup of coffee ( or another beverage of choice) with sweets or snacks. We also wanted to be a positive place, a place where people could be uplifted, inspired, and reaffirmed, a place where people could expect a warm friendly greeting and prompt courteous service.

We are now 6 years old, and have made great progress towards becoming what we want to be. People from all over the Triangle and beyond have found their way to Ideas! Most have been delighted with the products, services, and atmosphere they have found here. We have hosted several book signings and showings of art work by local artists. But we know that we still have a good way to go to become all that we want to be and all that we should be. AND WE NEED THE SUPPORT, HELP, AND INVOLVEMENT FROM GOOD PEOPLE LIKE YOU, FOR US TO REACH OUR GOAL!!

Plenty of hot ideas, hot coffee at (NCCU Alum's) shop

Some come for the good conversation. Others just for coffee. Situated between a nail salon and an Indian grocery store, Ideas Coffee House is a place where the atmosphere is relaxed and the television is always on a news channel. The shop opened in the Triangle Village shopping center, at the intersection of N.C. 55 and 54, in April 2002. Customers young and old enter through the shop's glass door every Monday through Saturday, but there was a time when that door was supposed to close for good. Ideas was a venture between Walter Jackson and two of his nephews. Jackson worked for an oil company in Cleveland, Ohio and upon retirement wanted to open a coffee shop in his hometown. He was inspired after seeing so many businesses of the same mold during a cross-country trip. "Although [Jackson was] the proprietor, we all considered it a family business," said Mack A. Jarmon, 64, one of the shop's current co-owners. "And everyone works together to make sure everything happens the way it's supposed to be." But the shop was not making as much money as the original owners had hoped it would. One of the nephews pulled out in November 2003 and Jarmon was asked to replace him. By June 2004, Jackson was ready to close the shop and sent out e-mails announcing his intentions. When Jarmon's brother, Gene, heard about the closing, he gave about $10,000 to keep it open. Mack Jarmon's wife thought her husband was crazy for wanting to keep the shop open. He would miss attending N.C. Central University football and basketball games and wouldn't have much time to enjoy retirement, Jarmon remembered her saying. His reply was that he wanted to establish a family legacy, and he hasn't heard a negative word since. "It's been like a roller coaster, like most businesses," Mack Jarmon said. "Fortunately for us it looks like it's looking more up than down." Mack Jarmon continues to run the shop today, along with his son, Delbert, and brother Gene. Hungry customers can purchase wrapped sandwiches and desserts while reading the books that are for sale. On the walls behind the counter hang banners of the area's major universities and in front are paintings and framed art. The shop hosts various events, including a January 2006 community conversation with three Tuskegee Airman and an upcoming community discussion titled "Genetics and You" on June 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. About 100 people, mostly repeat customers, visit the shop daily. On a good week, Allison Driver says she's at the coffee house every day. Driver, 26, found out about the shop through a flyer hanging at N.C. Central and has been a regular for the past four years. "The atmosphere is very relaxing, soothing," said Driver, a systems services administrator for a local pharmaceutical company, while eating a slice of chocolate cake. "It's like a chance to get away. It seems like the door is soundproof."

Relax & Enjoy!
